Downtime Interview w/ Seb Jarnot

Artist workspace

1) Location?

Nîmes (South of France)  🇫🇷

2) Years collaging?

I’ve been collaging for almost 10 years but old magazines collecting for more than 30 years.

3) What do you love and hate about collage?

I love the mix of mental complexity and sensibility while working, I love the accidents, the synchronicity, the surprises… I think « Hate » is a very strong word, I just can’t use it for any aspect of collage. Sometimes it could be a bit boring when nothing new or exciting emerges, but no hate.

4) Biggest influences?

Artists like Sonic Youth, David Lynch, Dash Snow, Serge Gainsbourg and Aphex Twin to name a few have had a huge impact on my work for years. Music is central to me.

5) Analog Vs Digital?

Most of my collages are analog because I love paper, printed stuff and doing real things, however I’m also deeply interested in the artistic relation between human and computer.  The process and result are different but I find what I love in collage (question 3) in both approaches.

6) How do you spend your downtime?

Sport… No just kidding ; ) Family, friends, drawing, music…

7) Three tips for someone starting out in collage?

Work, be obsessed and try not to go mad.

8) Up and coming shows or projects we should know about?

Not really connected with the collage, but then again… I will soon have my own radio show : ) called Obscura Data. I will be playing ambient, drone, no wave, soundtracks, psychedelic, krautrock, electro, indus, noise, folk, etc…My very first steps on radio, I’m nervous but highly excited about that!!! More infos to come on my website…
