Downtime Interview w/ Zach Collins

Artist mobile collage studio*

1) LOCATION?

Albuquerque, New Mexico - USA 🇺🇸

2) YEARS COLLAGING?

I started doing paper collage in 2011.

 3) WHAT DO YOU LOVE AND DISLIKE ABOUT COLLAGE??

I love the endless possibilities in materials that can be used.   At any  given moment I can incorporate so many other mediums, such as drawing, painting and photography to name a few. I like the mobility the medium allows me.  I can pack up the tools and materials and bring them with me. If I am not in the studio I can always be on the lookout for materials. There really isn’t anything I dislike about collage but it does bother me a little that m;y collages are limited in size by the materials I have which usually come from books and magazines.  I could print out my materials but I just don’t want to go that route. I wish the billboards were still using paper for their ads.

 4) BIGGEST INFLUENCES?

Dada Movement, my collaborative works Surrealism, Fluxus, and Graphic Design are big influencers. I get plenty of “inspiration” from my materials. Social media such as Facebook, and Instagram have great collage communities to share and view others' work.  There are so many great collage artists out there that I don’t feel comfortable listing a few. I will say that I have been fortunate enough to work with many people on collaborative collages.

 5) ANALOG VS DIGITAL, PROS & CONS?

I have done both and feel they are very different even though the approach is the same.  Collage is “everything” and anything. It is all artwork.  The interface is different which results in different searches and different decisions.  With digital collage I have found there to be too many possibilities.  I find myself more attracted to the immediacy of analog collage.

6) HOW DO YOU SPEND YOUR DOWNTIME?

Currently I am busy fixing up a property to move into and my daughter Brena and our four dogs Izzy, Zoey, Butterstuff, and Elva all keep me busy.

7) THREE TIPS FOR SOMEONE STARTING OUT IN COLLAGE?

There are no rules. Don’t be afraid to try new things. Learn from the process.

8) WHERE DO YOU SEE YOUR ART PRACTICE IN 5-10 YEARS’ TIME?

In 5-10 years I will be in a new home with a large studio so I am planning on doing larger works, more experimenting and to self publish another book idea I have.

9) UP AND COMING SHOWS OR PROJECTS WE SHOULD KNOW ABOUT?

No upcoming.
