Downtime Interview w/ Freya Jobbins

“Collage all-inclusive which I love, and is for EVERYBODY it does not discriminate, its non-elitist, and no need for an arts degree. ANYONE can collage.”

— Freya Jobbins, 2026

1) LOCATION?

I live in Lakesland which is not far out of Picton (SSW SYDNEY) 🇦🇺

2) YEARS COLLAGING?

I have been an analogue collage devotee for I would say over 20 years, probably more if you include all my school and Uni years. I have always found myself collecting images and interesting books at Op Shops and using collage in my practice as full on medium and as a warmup practice.

 3) WHY IS COLLAGE AN APPEALING MEDIUM?

It’s an instant statement-your statement, you create an image that otherwise would never have had existed without your imagination. Collage all-inclusive which I love, and is for EVERYBODY it does not discriminate, its non-elitist, and no need for an arts degree. ANYONE can collage. It includes all demographics and it’s a medium that is so humble, but best of all its probably the cheapest in material costs for an artist (unless you want to frame all your pieces). Its also so appealing to me as I am reusing old books, magazines etc that would otherwise (hopefully been recycled) and given the images another chance at life.

THE CHALLENGE FOR COLLAGE IN THE HIERARCHY OF MEDIA - THIS IS A STRUGGLE.

 4) WHO ARE THE BIGGEST INFLUENCES ON YOUR WORK?

Hannah Hoch, Louise Nevelson, Del Kathryn Barton, Deborah Roberts and Debra Kelly,

5) ANALOG VS DIGITAL, WHAT ARE THE PROS & CONS OF EACH?

Analogue: Tactile, create alone or in a group, community orientated, the more the merrier,  just need Scissors, glue, paper and pics, the hunt for images is all part of the process, using what already exists, using fine motor skills with cutting, you don’t have to buy computer equipment and pay for certain programs, no printing (copying costs only if you want to save a picture), easily scanned, I like feeling the layers of paper, feels more genuine to the craft.

Digital: Non tactile, creating alone, you may need a lot of expensive equipment and programs, printing and paper costs, not open to EVERYBODY and all ages.

6) WHAT ARE THREE TIPS FOR SOMEONE STARTING OUT IN COLLAGE?

Best images are in op-shops, trade images with other collagist, use good materials especially glues and thicker quality paper base to actually work on.

7) HOW DO YOU SPEND YOUR DOWNTIME?

Hunting in op-shops, binge watching, exercise and gardening.

8) WHERE DO YOU SEE YOUR ART PRACTICE HEADING?

Definitely sticking to Collage for a while, less assemblages, and pushing my collages even larger. Being a bigger ambassador for the medium of Collage, hopefully presenting more collage workshops. Lastly more experimentation with collage, working on 3D collage pieces and melding it with printmaking, somehow.

11) UP AND COMING SHOWS OR PROJECTS WE SHOULD KNOW ABOUT?

Nothing that I can let out of the bag just yet lol
