DOWNTIME w/ Rebecca Coltorti

1) LOCATION?

Spoleto, Italy 🇮🇹

2) YEARS COLLAGING?

I made my first fashion collage in 2015.

 3) WHAT DO YOU LOVE AND HATE ABOUT COLLAGE?

The thing I love and hate about collage is the same: when I start, I never know which direction the artwork will take and what the final result will be. It's exciting because I let myself be surprised by the course of the work, but it can be very frustrating when I'm struggling to find the right way, especially when I'm working on commission and I have a timeframe to follow.

 4) BIGGEST INFLUENCES?

Quentin Jones. One day I came across her work and said: I want to do this.

 5) ANALOG VS DIGITAL?

Digital. I love the freedom that Photoshop can give me in terms of compositions. In analogue collage there is no going back and this makes me feel creatively limited.

But I love the textures, the shadows, the overlapping that only handmade elements can give. So most of the time I cut out or prepare the elements by hand and then I work them digitally.

6) HOW DO YOU SPEND YOUR DOWNTIME?

If we exclude the creation of personal artworks, I am always listening to music, watching interviews or movies. Futsal is another great passion of mine.

7) THREE TIPS FOR SOMEONE STARTING OUT IN COLLAGE?

  • Do not constantly compare the work and results of others to your own.

  • Don't think about what is right or wrong based on what you see around you.

  • Continue to experiment and practice. Finding a personal style and aesthetics that stands out from the rest is crucial.

8) UP AND COMING SHOWS OR PROJECTS WE SHOULD KNOW ABOUT?

No upcoming shows due the current situation and I got a few publications coming out soon!
