About the Show:

Sydney Collage Society presents a group show, featuring artists working in and exploring the possibilities of contemporary collage. Each artist has developed a unique approach to their art making, whether it be in form, concept and/or process which move beyond cut and paste collage. Collage doesn’t exist in a vacuum, it is part of a cultural flow that connects all expressive mediums, be it painting or sculpture. Early on, collage found form in Cubism, Dada and Surrealism; challenging the established notions of art through playful re-interpretation and new formulations of what art is and what it can mean. Contemporary collage encompasses a diverse range of artists currently practicing around the world. These artists create works from their particular vantage point; their experience, dreams, fears and cultural commentary, all crystallise to form their work. They each gather their materials in different ways; some hoard books and work in rooms of wild chaos, while others dissect like a surgeon the particular parts of a new creation, their studios as precise as their technique. In a world increasingly saturated by images - now a constant stream on personal screens – collage artists harvest from the mass and reconfigure to make clear, to question, too upset expectation. At times it feels like a collage is only momentarily frozen and any minute the pieces will swirl across the page to form something new. It is in this pause, this decisive honouring of a relationship between parts, that this art form operates.

Artists: Danilo Brandao, Kate Yurk, Kitty Callaghan, Kubi Vasak, LA Early, Lizzy Peniazeva, Millie Bartlett, Myrrhine Fabicius, Simon Welsh & Stephen Tierney.

About the Show:

A series of large scale collage works that are the result of a process of collaboration between five artists. inspired by the work of Stephen Tierney, the works are an expression of the process of collage, a bi-product of collect, cut, create. Each artist's work, each voice, is sliced and woven into a new unity and this new form is a container of conversation. Exhibited as part of the Sydney Art Month.

About the show:

Our existence is saturated in images and through these images the world at once takes shape and loses its substance. Through our consumption and accumulation of these images, we attempt to define our reality. As we get further sucked into this visual vortex, we grasp for those image fragments that stand out, for their familiarity or even their horror. Here the line between humour and tragedy; reality and dream slips and slides, here lies collage. Through its re-contextualisation of images, collage has the capacity to tap into the collective memory; the subconscious, it can celebrate randomness and the beauty of happy accidents or impose order on chaos. Within the practice of collage there is infinite variation.

Sydney Collage Society presents a group show, featuring 11 artists working in and exploring the possibilities of contemporary collage. Each artist has developed a unique approach to their art making, whether it be in form, concept and or process which move beyond cut and paste collage.

About the Show:

Formed in 2013 by self-identifying mutant Morgan Jesse Lappin, the Brooklyn Collage Collective (BCC) quickly evolved through a combination of mind control and genetic talent. Lappin joined forces with other local artists whose work also defies the average human’s comprehension while radiating undercurrents of relatability and positive vibes. Now made up of ten core members, the BCC has exhibited work in galleries across the world. During one of these international adventures, members of the BCC met a group of collage artists from Sydney, Australia, and they teamed up for an exhibition. Soon after, their Australian friends formed the Sydney Collage Society. The Sydney Collage Society (SCS) is a collective of artists focused on the practice of analogue collage. Established in 2015 by founding members Kubi Vasak and Leah Early, SCS stays busy producing successful group shows and collage workshops at the Art Gallery of NSW. Each of its members transcends the ‘craft’ troupe to balance the ideals of art and design.
