Neil Ernest Tomkins aims to connect with place, exploring the spaces of stillness within the motions of everyday life. Many of his direct references to landscape serve as an investigation into how individuals visually perceive the world around them. Often breaking down subject matter into fragments, his work evokes a sense of connection through displacement. Tomkins represents a re-emergence of the travel painter—a deep exploration of the unknown expressed with joyous appreciation. In recent years, he has focused on what he calls the dissected landscape.
Using collage as a central technique, he layers representational ideals of landscape into fragmented forms, creating compositions that encourage the audience to engage actively with the work. Through this process, he explores spatial understanding and interpretation in a way that merges abstraction with familiar imagery. Tomkins also explores movement through his understanding of colour. By contextualising his works through travel, the varying light of different locations informs stories that are global in scope, all rendered through his distinctive collaged approach.
