New Artist Downtime Interview w/ Ming Nomchong

In our latest Downtime interview we speak with Byron Bay-based artist Ming Nomchong, who has spent the past five years exploring collage as a way of reimagining her photographic practice. Beginning with imagery collected for her book PACIFIC, Ming discovered the possibilities of dissecting and reassembling her own photographs to create new ideas, meanings and visual narratives.

Working through an analogue process — from shooting and hand-printing to cutting and collaging — Ming embraces the slower, more intuitive nature of making by hand. Inspired by the coastal and oceanic landscapes of Australia and the Pacific, her work explores nature, texture, pattern and the unexpected relationships that emerge when different images are brought together.
