DOWNTIME w/ John Gall
1) Location? New York/New Jersey 🇺🇸
2) Years collaging? Most of my life but only seriously for the past 10-15 years.
3) What do you love and hate about collage? Love: Anybody can do it. Hate: Collage as surreal, narrative picture making.
4) Biggest influences? Miles Davis, Yusef Lateef, Sun Ra, John Cage, Alice Coltrane, Bob Dylan, Guided By Voices, Yoko Ono, Ellsworth Kelly, Isa Genzken, John Stezaker, Ruth Van Beek, Robert Ryman, Richard Tuttle, George Saunders, dollar stores and rock collections.
5) Analog Vs Digital? Analog for art. Analog/Digital for illustration.
6) How do you spend your downtime? Watch baseball on TV.
7) Three tips for someone starting out in collage? I am not sure what kind of advice to give but for me it is about thinking very deeply about what you are doing while leaving open the possibility to capitalize on mistakes and serendipitous juxtapositions. Something I refer to as "labored spontaneity".
8) Up and coming shows or projects we should know about? A book might be in the works.
