Downtime Interview w/ Jack Felice
“While working on a collage I give myself the opportunity to clear my head and stop worrying about life around me”
— Jack Felice, 2026
1) LOCATION?
I am based in Tallahassee, Florida, USA. 🇺🇸
2) YEARS COLLAGING?
I have been working with collage for about ten years.
3) WHY IS COLLAGE AN APPEALING MEDIUM?
Collage offers so much flexibility and room to experiment. I feel as though I can continue collaging for the rest of my life and still stumble upon new avenues of collage. I also enjoy the hunt for source material and the endless collection of printed material to sift through. There’s this gratifying feeling when you discover an image that sparks the beginning of a collage. For me, collage is an incredibly therapeutic medium. While working on a collage I give myself the opportunity to clear my head and stop worrying about life around me.
4) WHO ARE THE BIGGEST INFLUENCES ON YOUR WORK?
I have so many influences that impact my work, but some of my main influences currently would be: Henri Matisse, Francis Bacon, John Gall, David Lynch, and the poetry of John Ashbery.
5) ANALOG VS DIGITAL, WHAT ARE THE PROS & CONS OF EACH?
As an artist that works primarily in analogue collage, I’d say the pros of working within the analogue realm would be the connection I feel to a piece while I’m working on it. You can interact with a physical collage in so many ways that you cannot with a digital collage. The uncertainties and imperfections that come along with analogue collage have always led me in interesting directions. With digital collage, on the other hand, you do have the opportunity to take risks without sacrificing an entire piece.

6) WHAT ARE THREE TIPS FOR SOMEONE STARTING OUT IN COLLAGE?
Try to create as much as possible. The more you collage, the more you discover about the medium and about yourself. Also, not everything you work on has to lead to a ground-breaking collage. The mere act of working on a piece is enough in my opinion, even if the end result isn’t something you necessarily are in love with. These experiences help narrow down what you like and don’t like, what works and doesn’t work.
7) HOW DO YOU SPEND YOUR DOWNTIME?
Aside from collage, I enjoy playing tennis, reading, and gardening.
8) WHERE DO YOU SEE YOUR ART PRACTICE HEADING?
I try not to plan too far ahead, but I hope my art practice continues to grow and lead to new connections with fellow collage artists around the world. I feel so grateful that the collage community is full of so much inspiration and I’ve made tons of warm friendships along the way that have impacted my personal life in ways I never imagined.

9) WHICH THREE ARTISTS SHOULD WE CHECK OUT?
Oliver Lunn, Paul Henderson, and Michael DeSutter are three artists who continually amaze and inspire me.
10) WHAT MUSIC ARE YOU LOVING RIGHT NOW?
Chic, Alexander O’Neal and Sade.
11) UP AND COMING SHOWS OR PROJECTS WE SHOULD KNOW ABOUT?
I just released a book of my collages with the help of the great John Gall. You can still order yourself a copy via John’s Paperback Record Store website.
